biodegradable urn

Return is a biodegradable urn, made from rose petals. Together with agar agar, it forms a new material that dissolves in water.

There are a lot of flower shops and flower auctions who can’t sell large quantities of flowers. These will be thrown away or burned. To be able to give these flowers a second life, Jasper Heymand and I had the idea to make a biodigradable urn with those flowers. It can be used for both sea and land.

During the farewell ritual, flowers are deposited with the person. Now the flowers are already processed in the urn. In this way, friends and family can enjoy the swirling rose petals in the sea.

With this project, Jasper Heymans and I got selected for the OVAM Ecodesign Awards 2017 and acheived to get an honorable mention.
process
First, the rose petals dried whereafter they were cut and shredded in smaller parts.

After that, the rose petals were put into a bowl with other elements like agar agar and flour.

Everything was blended with hands and the material was put into a mold where it could dry.
